Petersburg is located about 23 miles south of Richmond, the capital of the state of Virginia. It is an independent city and has population of about 34,000 according to 2000 census. The city is located on the banks of the Appomattox River. The city can be reached by road via the Interstate 85 and 95 and U.S. Route 1, 301 and 460. Petersburg is known for its pharmaceutical companies. Other areas of interest in the city include the Battersea, a Palladian style house built in 1767, one of the places that is on the National Register of Historical Places. The city is also the home to Nancy Davis Reagan, former First Lady of the United States of America.
